Common Mistakes in Tricky Story and How to Avoid Them

Keep failing the same Tricky Story levels? These are the most common mistakes players make — and the simple habit changes that turn failures into fast solutions.

Most Tricky Story failures aren't about difficulty — they're about habits. Players bring assumptions from other puzzle games that don't apply here, then blame the level when they're stuck. These are the mistakes we see again and again, and the easy fixes that make every Tricky Story level click faster.

1. Treating the Goal Text as a Hint

In most games, the instruction is a hint toward the solution. In Tricky Story, the instruction is the puzzle. A goal like "Help Anna regain her strength" means exactly what it says — find things that restore strength, in a logical order. Players who skim it as flavour text miss the actual clue.

Fix: Read the goal word by word before touching anything. The verbs and nouns are your road map.

2. Ignoring Background Objects

Tricky Story's cartoon art makes some objects look purely decorative. They aren't. The vase, the photo frame, the cat on the shelf — any of them can be the key prop. Players who only interact with the obvious foreground items get stuck.

Fix: Tap or drag every object once, including ones in the background corners. If nothing happens, it's not interactive; if the cursor changes or the character reacts, it is.

3. Doing Steps in the Wrong Order

Many levels have several valid objects but only one valid sequence. Feeding Anna porridge before the medicine works; doing it after doesn't, because her state has changed. Players who dump all items at once fail.

Fix: Add one item, watch the character's reaction, then add the next. The reaction tells you whether the order is right.

4. Not Revisiting Items After a Scene Change

Some props only become usable after the story advances. The wardrobe might be inert until Anna is dressed, then suddenly hold the next clue. Players who tried the wardrobe early and dismissed it never go back.

Fix: After any scene change (a character moves, dialogue appears, time passes), re-scan every object you already dismissed.

5. Fighting the Timer Instead of the Sequence

Timed levels feel like they reward speed, but they actually reward efficiency. The clock is almost always long enough for the correct sequence and too short for trial-and-error. Players who panic and spam taps run out of time.

Fix: On timed levels, work out the mandatory steps first (ignoring the clock), then execute them smoothly. The sequence, not the speed, is what beats the timer.

6. Skipping the Level Screenshot

Each of our Tricky Story walkthrough pages includes the level screenshot. Players who jump straight to reading the text miss the easiest way to confirm they're on the right page — and sometimes the screenshot alone reveals the solution (you spot the prop you forgot to drag).

Fix: Always glance at the level image first. If it matches your screen, read the Quick Answer; if not, you're on the wrong level.

7. Reading the Full Walkthrough Too Early

A full step-by-step solution spoils the "aha" moment that makes Tricky Story fun. Players who jump to the complete guide the instant they're stuck never build the pattern-recognition that makes later levels easier.

Fix: Read only the Quick Answer first. It's a nudge, not a spoiler. Fall back to the full solution only if the nudge doesn't click — which, most of the time, it will.

Build the Right Habits

Fix these seven habits and the game's difficulty curve flattens out dramatically. Whenever a level still stumps you, the full Tricky Story walkthrough is one click away — but you'll need it far less often once you're observing, sequencing, and revisiting instead of guessing.
